Terry Wey - countertenor back

Counter-tenor Terry Wey will open the new season 2008/09 as Ruggiero in a new production of Vivaldi’s Orlando Furioso under the baton of Rubén Dubrovsky at Oper Bonn. Later this season he will make his debuts at Theater an der Wien in Partenope under Christophe Rousset (director: Pierre Audi), at Teatro Real Madrid in Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria under William Christie (director: Pier Luigi Pizzi) and at Händelfestspiele Halle and Bregenzer Festspiele in Anaesthesia, a Händel-music-project of Nico and the Navigators. Among his further engagements rank his role-debut as Gluck’s Orfeo (concert-performance) in Nürnberg, performances of Händel’s Messiah under Frieder Bernius in Essen and Cremona, the revival of the Schwetzingen-production of Legrenzi’s Il Giustino at Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg and baroque-concerts with Rubén Dubrovsky and his Bachconsort Vienna at the Wiener Musikverein.

Under the baton of conductors such as William Christie, Thomas Hengelbrock, Marc Minkowski or Michael Hofstetter, and together with original-sound orchestras such as Balthasar-Neumann-Ensemble, Les Arts Florissants or Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble, Terry Wey was guest in some of the most important concert-halls and festivals, e.g. at Musikverein Wien, Barbican Centre London, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Lincoln Center New York, Schwetzinger Festspiele, Lucerne Festival, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele or Styriarte Graz.

On Opera-stage he performed in a variety of different roles such as Oberon (Britten: A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Adelberto (Händel: Ottone), Andronico (Legrenzi: Il Giustino), Roma & Religione (Landi: Il Sant’Alessio) or Ruggiero (Vivaldi: Orlando Furioso) at opera-houses such as Oper Bonn, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg or Théâtre des Camps-Elysées Paris. Amongst others he worked together with stage-directors such as Nicolas Brieger and Benjamin Lazar. In addition to this and as a labour of love for renaissance-music he founded the vocal-ensemble Cinquecento. Furthermore he performed together with leading ensembles such as Huelgas Ensemble or Le Poème Harmonique.
Terry Wey’s discography contains three CDs of Cinquecento (hyperion), complete recordings of Albinoni’s Il Nascimento dell’Aurora (oehms classics) and Conti’s David (cpo), as well as Bach’s H-Moll-Messe under Marc Minkowski (naïve).

Terry Wey was born in Bern/Switzerland and got his singing-education as soloist of the Wiener Sängerknaben (teacher: Silvija V. Purchar). Later he worked together with Kurt Equiluz and Christine Schwarz. First appearances together with the Clemencic Consort under René Clemencic in 2003 led the young price-winner of several competitions (e.g. MIGROS-Genossenschaftsbund Zürich, Kärntner-Sparkasse Wörthersee Music-Scholarship) to a rapid entry into the international concert- and opera-world.
