Joel Prieto - tenor back

Joel Prieto is 1st-price-winner of the Operalia 2008 competition. In addition he was awarded the Zarzuela-special-price and the Culturarte-price in Quebec.
Joel Prieto was member of Atelier Lyrique Paris and of Deutsche Oper Berlin, where his roles included Tamino (Zauberflöte), Tybalt (Romeó et Juliette) and Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor). In 2007/08 he made his debuts at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville under the baton of Peter Schreier in Haydn’s Creation and at Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden, where he sang Arturo in concert performances of Lucia di Lammermoor with Edita Gruberova. In July 2008 he joined Placido Domingo for performances of Luisa Fernanda conducted by Josep Caballe at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. Afterwards he was chosen member of the First ‘Montblanc Young Singers Project’ at Salzburg Festival, which gave him opportunity to work with Michael Schade and Barbara Bonney and to appear in a Final Concert with Mozarteum Orchester under the baton of Ivor Bolton within the official festival program. In 2008/09 Joel Prieto will make a considerable number of debuts: He sings for the first time at Palau de les Arts Valencia in the new production of Martin y Soler’s Arbore di Diana under the baton of Rubén Dubrovsky and - at the same house - Ferrando in a new production of Cosi fan tutte. In this very role he can be heard for the first time at Scottish Opera. In January 2009 he will make his recital-debut in London. For the upcoming seasons there are already invitations from Barcelona, Santiago de Chile and Toulouse.
 
In the summer of 2007, he sang with great success his first performance of Conte d’Almaviva in Barbiere di Siviglia with Compania Lirica de Puerto Rico. He also sang a recital with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas at New York City’s Museo del Barrio as well as in the Stowe Music Festival in Vermont.
In the 2005-06 season he appeared as Arlecchino in Pagliacci with Compania Lirica de Puerto Rico and as Lorenz in Lehar’s Frühling at the Opera Comique in Paris. He also took part in the world premiere of Dayer’s Les Aveugles in both Paris and at the Almeida Theater in London.

In previous seasons, Mr. Prieto has sung excerpts of Ramiro in Cenerentola, Alfredo in Traviata, and Nemorino in Elisir d’Amore at the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy as well as Remendado in Carmen at the France’s Festival Lyrique en Mer. On the concert stage, previous engagements include the Evangelist in Herzogenberg’s Die Geburt Christi in Lucerne, Switzerland.

He is a 2005 Regional Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions where he also received prizes for best male singer and zarzuela performance. The Spanish-born tenor was raised in Puerto Rico and made his studies at Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
