In his second season with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Joel Prieto is establishing himself as one of opera’s most promising young tenors. He returns to the company to sing in the 2007-2008 season as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and the Messenger in Aida. Also in the current season, he sings the tenor part in Haydn’s Creation at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville under the baton of Peter Schreier. In July 2008 he will join Placido Domingo for performances of Luisa Fernanda conducted by Josep Caballe at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. In the summer of 2007, he sang with great success his first performance of Conte d’Almaviva in Barbiere di Siviglia with Compania Lirica de Puerto Rico. He also sang a recital with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas at New York City’s Museo del Barrio as well as in the Stowe Music Festival in Vermont.
In the 2006-07 season, his roles with the Deutsche Oper Berlin included Tamino in Zauberflöte, Seemann in Tristan und Isolde and Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette as well as a performance at the season opening gala concert. In the 2005-06 season he sang Arlecchino in Pagliacci with Compania Lirica de Puerto Rico, a concert at the Palais Garnier as a member of the prestigious Atelier Lyrique of Opera National de Paris, excerpts from Gluck’s Armide and Iphigénie en Tauride at the Opera Bastille’s amphitheater and the role of Lorenz in Lehar’s Frühling at the Opera Comique in Paris. He also sang the world premiere of Dayer’s Les Aveugles in both Paris and at the Almeida Theater in London.
In previous seasons, Mr. Prieto has sung excerpts of Ramiro in Cenerentola, Alfredo in Traviata, and Nemorino in Elisir d’Amore at the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy as well as Remendado in Carmen at the France’s Festival Lyrique en Mer. On the concert stage, previous engagements include the Evangelist in Herzogenberg’s Die Geburt Christi in Lucerne, Switzerland.
He is a 2005 Regional Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions where he also received prizes for best male singer and zarzuela performance. The Spanish-born tenor was raised in Puerto Rico and made his studies at Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
