Herbert Schuch, instrumental soloist
Herbert Schuch was born in Temesvar (Romania) in
1979. After early piano lessons in his home town, he emigrated with his family
in 1988 to Germany,
where he now lives. He continued his musical studies with Kurt Hantsch and then
with Prof. Karl-Heinz Kämmerling at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In the recent past Herbert Schuch
has been particularly influenced by his encounters and work with Alfred
Brendel. He attracted international attention when he won three important piano
competitions - the Casagrande competition, the London International Piano
Competition and the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna - within the space
of a single year.
Since then he has worked with
orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Mozart Players,
Camerata Salzburg, Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Orchestre National de Lille,
Dresdner Philharmonie, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Bamberger Symphoniker, the radio
symphony orchestras of hr, MDR, WDR and NDR Hannover, Staatsphilharmonie
Rheinland-Pfalz, and Düsseldorfer Symphoniker. He is a regular guest at
festivals such as Kissinger Sommer, Rheingau Musik Festival, Klavier-Festival
Ruhr, Salzburger Festspiele, and the Musikfest Stuttgart. He collaborates with
conductors Pierre Boulez, Andrey Boreyko, Douglas Boyd, Jean-Claude Casadesus,
Olari Elts, Lawrence Foster, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Dmitrij Kitajenko, Jesús
López Cobos, Jun Märkl, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jonathan Nott, Markus Poschner,
Alexander Vedernikov, and Lothar Zagrosek.
Highlights of Herbert Schuch’s
2012/2013 season include a tour with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra
conducted by Michel Tabachnik in November, concerts with the NHK Symphony
Orchestra under the baton of Jun Märkl and his recital debut in the
Philharmonie Berlin as well as concerts in New York, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, at
the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, and at the Kissinger Sommer with the Residentie
Orkest Den Haag conducted by Lawrence Foster.
His interest in chamber music,
stimulated by his childhood training on the violin, is something he shares with
such musicians as Adrian Brendel, Mirijam Contzen, Veronika Eberle, Julia
Fischer, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Sebastian Klinger, Alina Pogostkin and Martin
Spangenberg. After standing in at short notice at the 2010 Festival, Herbert
Schuch was invited to perform at the opening concert of this year's Salzburg
Festival, where he appeared with such musicians as Renaud Capuçon, Antoine
Tamestit, Clemens Hagen, Magali Mosnier, Albrecht Mayer, Martin Grubinger and
Sebastian Manz.
The OehmsClassics label has now
released six albums with Herbert Schuch, in which the pianist dedicates himself
to his prime interests: Schumann, Ravel and Schubert recur in his concept
albums - such as "Nachtstücke" (night pieces) and "Sehnsuchtswalzer"
(waltzes of yearning) - along with Holliger and Lachenmann. A CD released in
November 2012 features him in Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto coupled with the
Piano Concerto by Viktor Ullmann, together with the WDR Symphony Orchestra
conducted by Olari Elts. Herbert Schuch’s current chamber
music CD featuring quintets for piano and winds by Beethoven and Mozart has
recently won the ECHO Klassik Award in the category chamber music recording of
the year.
Alongside his concert work, Herbert
Schuch has been active for some time in the "Rhapsody in School"
organization founded by Lars Vogt, which is committed to bringing classical
music into schools.
