The undoubted star was the handsome Slovakian baritone Dalibor Jenis, in his Michigan Opera Theatre debut as the wily Figaro. He delivered the barber's signature entrance patter song, "Largo al factotum," with exceptional energy and excellent diction. Although Jenis is already well-known in Central Europe, his U.S. career is just beginning; based on this Figaro, the baritone deserves to have international success. Whenever he was present, Jenis truly commanded the stage.

When Barbiere took the stage, the Barber himself dominated, single-handedly wiping out the rest of the cast. Czech baritone Dalibor Jenis, in his American debut, created just about the most exciting, musically compelling Figaro possible. Musically sensitive and sensible, Jenis has charisma with a capital “C.” Jenis’s stunningly beautiful voice and acting were both large-scale; he belted out the music and the comedy, perfectly at ease in the most demanding stunts of Herbert Kellner’s hilarious staging. Here was a Figaro capable of dressing while singing the “Largo al factotum” (from boxer shorts on up), sliding down a fireman’s pole, dancing and cavorting all over the stage. He even played the guitar to accompany Almaviva’s Act I serenade.
