Benno Schachtner, countertenor

German countertenor Benno Schachtner is the first countertenor in the history of prestigious Bach International Competition Leipzig who received the title “Bachpreisträger” and, in addition to that, the Orchestra Prize. Already in 2010 he was awarded “Best Young Singer of Nordrhein-Westfalen”.

The countertenor starts the season 2014/15 with Bach concerts at Staatstheater Nürnberg and a CD recording with Capella de la torre in cooperation with BR/SONY. Afterwards René Jacobs choses him as soloist of a concert tour with Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, which brings him to Hamburg, Lausanne, Helsinki and to Spain. Further concert engagements include Weihnachtsoratorium with Staatskapelle Halle, concerts with Hamburger Ratsmusik and at Festival Rhein Vokal. At State Theatre Halle he sings the revival of Arminio and will be heard in this role at Handel Festival as well. Theater St. Gallen engaged him in the role of Angel/Boy for the Swiss Premiere of Benjamin’s Written on Skin.

Benno Schachtner was invited to sing the opening concert of Bachfest Leipzig 2014. Before that he made his debut at Bach Festival Seoul/Korea. In summer 2014 he will sing for the first time with the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra conducted by René Jacobs. Under his baton Benno Schachtner returned to Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin in Cavalieri’s Rappresentazione di anima et di corpo. Further opera engagements of the 2013/14 season included Ottone in a new production of Monteverdi’s Incoronazione di Poppea at Theater Erfurt and the revival of Triumph der Liebe at historical theatre Bad Lauchstädt. Concerts with Chorus sine nomine in Linz, Sing Akademie Frankfurt, in Dresden’s famous Frauenkirche and a solo recital at Berliner Konzerthaus completed this season’s engagements.

In the 2011/12 season Benno Schachtner made his debut at Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. In 2012/13 he made his debut in the title role of Giulio Cesare by Handel at Theater Erfurt and at Staatstheater Braunschweig where he sang in a scenic version of  Handel's Saul. At Theater Erfurt he already performed Prinz Medoro in the opera Triumph der Liebeas well as in Henry Purcell's King Arthur both in the 2010/11 season. In October 2009 he performed in the tile role of Handel's Arminio at Detmolder Konzerthaus as well as the title role in Handel's Orlando at the Landestheater Detmold.

Benno Schachtner was born in 1984 in Illertissen (Bavaria). As a boy soprano and soloist with the " Ulmer Spatzen " he made several trips at home and abroad (including Luxembourg, Holland and Japan). He repeatedly was awarded at the competition „Jugend musiziert“ on state and federal levels (state champion in Baden-Wuerttemberg). 2004 to 2009 Benno Schachtner studied at the Detmold Academy of Music church music with Prof. Gerhard Weinberger and 2008-2010 in the singing class of Prof. Heiner Eckels. In September 2010 he joined the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in the singing class of Prof. Ulrich Messthaler.
